Chapter 22: Chapter 22
Wow, okay, this is a long reply. First, I finished reading what’s posted of the story so far. I love it. It’s amazing. I’m nitpicky about my stories, and probably miss out on some good fics as a result. I don’t like having Jim top and Spock bottom. It’s one of those things where even if the story is good, I’ll lose interest or have to skip over the smut. I don’t know for certain how you’re going to define them that way (Jim’s fantasies suggest he wants to top, but when Spock was getting confident it seemed like he might have it in him to push Jim down instead). Whatever the case may be, I don’t care. I’ll keep reading no matter what. The story is just that damn good.
In response to the body temperature thing, I can definitely see Vulcans having enough control over their bodily functions to release stored up heat when necessary. I’m not sure about the warm breath or skin being hot to the touch. I know on a basic biological level that as a means of adapting to desert climates, Vulcans would have a lower body temp (I’m not an expert, so I could be wrong).
The exact body temperature of 91F comes from here:

I’m curious about this particular aspect of Vulcan physiology since I was initially under the impression that they were warmer. I read one fanfic that said otherwise, but before I commented on it as an error, I did some research. I found nothing supporting that Vulcans were warmer, and a few references to their being cooler. Thus far, the excerpt you gave is the closest I’ve read to anything stating Vulcans are warmer, but it doesn’t give an exact number, so I’d be wary of assuming anything. It might be implying that Vulcans can radiate heat at will, but would maintain a cooler core temperature under normal Vulcan conditions? In any case, I’m going to have to stick with the fact of Vulcan’s being at 91F. Author's Response:
These are so interesting - thank you for the links! It makes me wish there were some sort of official canon regarding Vulcan physiology, because now I see that different sources report different data. Back on the kink meme there was a long discussion about how Vulcans would actually have higher body temperatures in order to adapt to their climate, because if their core body temperature was cooler than a human's, they would overheat even more than Vulcans do or they'd need to use more energy to regulate their temperature or... honestly, I suck at science, so I can't remember the exact reasoning, I just remember totally buying into it. I'll go through my kink meme links to see if I bookmarked it. Anyway, ever since then I've latched on to the idea of Vulcans being warmer than humans. I may have to bring this up on Livejournal to see what people think. Thank you so much for showing me these!
