What can I say about this story to encompass all that it means? It's amazing. The depth given to the characters, the emotions so vividly portrayed, the language wrapping and weaving flawlessly like intricate poetry. At times I laughed, other times my eyes filled with salt water, but all throughout my heart raced. The love exhibited in this piece was incredibly beautiful and poignant. I think I've read this story more times than any other in the fandom.

Thank you for this gift. Thank you for the experience of it. But most of all, thank you for engaging my mind.

This story was absolutely amazing. I read through it thoroughly riveted the entire time, unable to tear my eyes away. Your attention to detail is nothing short of spectacular and I was able to not only visualize the events of the story as they were taking place, but also feel them. A K/S shipper through and through I normally have no sympathy for anyone who tries to come between them but I found that I had a lot of empathy for the protagonist of this story. The poor man didn't have a shot in hell from the get-go and he knew it and ultimately hated himself for it. Your gift at storytelling shines through this piece with all of the wonderful skill of a master craftsman.

Thanks so much for your feedback! (I tried to respond at the time, but there was some archive problem, and it wouldn't allow me to post responses.) I'm glad it felt so very real to you. I find writing original characters in the first person allows me to better understand them and better convey who they are to readers.

Thataway by CatalenaMara Rated: All Audiences starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 7]
Summary: On their way back to Earth after Vger, Kirk and Spock come to understand what they are, and will be, to each other. AUTHOR’S NOTE/THANKS: I wrote this story in 1980, shortly after the release of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”. I was just beginning to consider writing K/S, but found I wasn’t quite ready to go that ‘final step’, so this story is still pre-K/S. “Thataway” was originally published in “Nome” # 4, copyright January, 1981. My thanks to the original editors.

This was an incredible piece. I love the psychology of it, the way it delved into character motivations. Such an intensely vivid portrayal of Kirk, and so visceral.

The story felt intimate, and entirely relatable, effortlessly capturing what it feels like to be at a crossroad in life.

I especially enjoyed the simple elegance in which you addressed Kirk and Spock's relationship, understated in a way that they always have been, yet conveying so much with body language, with their eyes, in that way where they say little, but what they say means everything. There was a reverence there that was brilliant to read and experience.

I really enjoyed this, thank you!

This was absolutely fabulous! It had all of the components of a really, really great story, equal parts captivating, vivid, emotive and beautiful. The love scenes were extremely engrossing, the perfect blend of eroticism and romance, and the thought of Spock drunk was too precious for words... I must admit, I especially enjoyed that scene in particular. ;-)

The characterization was fantastic as well. Spock and Jim were fabulously done, but I also enjoyed the snippets we got of McCoy. I can just picture Kelley's facial expressions as he beheld an intoxicated Spock. Just priceless.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you so much! I'm definitely bookmarking this to come back and enjoy again and again. :-)

Wow, this was positively stunning in its beauty. I've been hankering for fal tor pan fics, did a search, found this gem and am kicking myself for not discovering it sooner. The depth of feeling to this piece, particularly to Kirk's anguish during Spock's recovery, and Spock's turmoil when emotions coursed through him once more was so vivid, so engrossing, that it was tangible. Truly, reading this was a visceral experience. And the flow was amazing, your way with words is positively inspirational. Thank you for the wonderful experience. This fic fulfilled my yearning and then some. :-)

This!

Well put. Extremely well put.

In fact, I rec'd your essay on my livejournal, adding my own two cents on the fandoms' need to create 'sides' where none is really necessary. Star Trek, at it's best, is entertaining, thought-provoking, and beautiful. A finely crafted piece of cinema and storytelling. Reboot is just the latest installment to embody these ideals.

Abrams did good. I'm thankful to him and his team for breathing new life into Trek and bringing with it a wider fanbase that spans ages and will ensure Trek's continued survival. Perhaps even into the 23rd century. ;-)

Tribble!Kirk Challenge:

So I saw the summary for this story by eclipse, and then I thought of the manga Karneval, and then I thought, I want Tribble!Kirk! I know there's an actual (awesome) story with Jim and Spock as tribbles, but this is different. I want a real tribble to have been genetically engineered (or magically) to be a human being... named Jim Kirk. The reason he's male is because his creators didn't want him getting pregnant... but it doesn't work! I want Jim still adjusting to life as a human (whether he remembers being a tribble or not is up to you), with tribble-like behaviors and of course, mpreg!

Bonus points Abrams verse. Bonus points for very, very few people knowing he was a tribble (maybe Pike and Bones only? Maybe Spoke Prime doesn't even know?). Bonus, bonus points for Spock being very, very confused by illogical tribble!Kirk (and of course being unable to resist him ^_~)

My first attempt at an mpreg...though, not exactly what I thought my first mpreg would be about...

Oh wow. You know, this story is proof positive that I need to visit this site more than just to post and run, which is so often the case with me *sheepish grin*. As a working mother, on the rare occasions when I do have internet time I spend most of it either writing myself or hanging out on livejournal and tumblr, its unfortunate that by doing so I have missed some tremendous gems, like this story.

To be honest, upon reading the challenge, I was a tiny bit incredulous, just a tad. I didn't think anyone could take this type of plot and make it believable, but you've done it and with aplomb! What a strong testiment to your talent as a storyteller. This story is so engaging, the perfect blend of intrigue, heart and humor. Good job, you!

Do you have a livejournal? I'm willing to bet that the kirkspock comm on lj would just love you.

Author's Response:

*blushes uncontrollably* Wow, way to make my entire week. lol. First, yes, I do have a livjournal--I actually just created it a few weeks ago when I signed up for the 2012 K/S Advent, even though I know I didn't have to in order to participate this year. I figured the fics I'm doing for that would help me test the waters with the LJ community.

As for this little story...it continues to be a ton of fun to write. I think the person who authored the challenge has mentioned that she meant for it to be taken seriously, and I've tried to do that while also making it cutely hilarious. I'm gratified to see that I have succeeded in that so far. I really do appreciate you taking time to read it, despite what hesitancy you may have initially had in doing so. I certainly never imagined it would have done so well among those who have read it, lol. But I'm glad it has...This is without question the most fun I've had writing anything--ever. lol.

Thank you for taking time to read and review. I hope you'll stop by and check out the advent stories when they're done. :)

I'm so glad to hear you're joining the Advent! It's such great fun. I've signed up, too. This will mark my third year participating (the advent is one of the things I very much look forward to every year, for a whole month we get K/S, more K/S and even more K/S - so many stories and such wonderful art, there is nothing not to love there!) I have every faith that your contribution to it is going to be wonderful, I can't wait to read what you come up with! :)

So glad to hear that you've ventured into livejournal... have you joined the kirkspock community yet? It's the largest and most active K/S community on livejournal. If you're ever inclined to post your fics on livejournal, or link to the ones you've posted here, that's the place to do it.

You've probably got it all figured out already, but if you need help with anything livejournal-related, as far as posting under a cut, or linking to your fic posts, let me know. My livejournal user name is jaylee_g. :)

Author's Response:

I actually don't know my ass from a hole in the wall when it comes to LJ, lol. But Ivycross and Amanda Warrington have said they will also help me figure out how to post my stories when the time comes. Amanda even sent me some example links. I'll be honest, I'm a little nervous about it. I had someone tell me via ff.net that my stories were crap, that my summaries for my stories were crap and condescending, even though I pretty much just copied what I saw everyone else doing, lol, and that my characterizations were crap, that my stories were saccharine and then she basically called me a carbon copy CMM (which really annoyed me because she and I are cool, but I NEVER copy anyone. I write how I write Grr!) and then went on to bash everything and everyone on the archive and that's why she sticks with ff.net and LJ, so ever since then I have pretty much been leary of communities outside of the archive. I'm worried about running into that person again...She really discouraged me for a while...I couldn't write anything but porn for a whole week LOL!

She basically scarred me for life, which I'm sure makes her day, lol. I don't even know why I decided to post on ff.net...I mean I haven't liked the site in years, but it's where I stared in fanfiction, you know? So, I thought I should post there too. I would post more, because people are still adding me to their favorites and following me on there but...there really are just too many people who get off on flaming. No more. Not ever. I hope LJ turns out better.

Everyone here has always been really nice to me, critqued my work to help me improve, always been kind about pointing out typos and being encouraging and I try to do the same too. So, I'm nervous about the advent. I already have two of the three stories I signed up for done and in the process of being beta'd...but...I'm still nervous as hell that I'm gonna get reamed over something by someone. LOL.

I haven't joined any communities or done much with my page, but if the stories I write ARE well received and the people are similar there to the people here...then I might post there as well regularly. We'll see. Thank you for being so sweet and offering to help me figure out the LJ stuff. I will probably take you up on your offer. I truly am clueless and I haven't had time (been moving, you know) to sit down and just take a tour of the site and the interface. I'll get to it this week...I hope. lol

Oh well, I'll look forward to seeing your word for the advent too. I do so love your fics, especially nu!verse. :D

This was exceedingly hot - the love scene absolutely scorching.

I also enjoyed the underlining psychology of the story, too, particularly in regards to Jim. You showed a deft hand by adding layers to this piece without those layers distracting from the smut.

Holy Hannah these were hot. Both of them! You know, I'd never considered the Bones/Sarek pairing before, but now I want to go find every story I can find of this pairing. You've definitely opened a can of worms. ;)

*fans self*

Beautifully written fics. Such a great combination of humor, heart and insightful characterization. Can't wait to see what else you've got up your sleeve!

Author's Response:

Awe, thank you so very much! I'm glad Bones/Sarek are getting such a warm reception. I don't write them too often, but I have a few friends on here who really enjoy the pairing so taking this challenge was kind of a Christmas gift for them (they know who they are, lol). I wasn't sure how receptive everyone else would be to it, because while I've done it before, it's never been to this degree as far as length and depth are concerned.

Anyway, as a side to the response you gave me to my review for your advent story, I appreciate the thoughts and I completely understand about moving. My husband and I just moved for the second time in two months. We thought it would be a good idea to move closer to the area where all of his contracts were coming from (he was doing Software Engineering contracting) but when the one he was working on ended way before schedule, due to the company not having anymore work, and he and the rest of their current contractors were laid off, we decided it was time to look for something more stable. Just so happened that the offer he got was 50 miles from where we just moved. So we moved AGAIN, but at least he's not on contract and they're reimbursing us. Still, it's a huge hassle--I know--and I hope you're settling in well. Thanks for the kind words!
