Kirk competes with his mother, too? I thought it was just me. That's always an awkward moment, trying to be the big adult and realizing your parents have all this life and experience you don't know anything about. But, like Kirk, I know some things Mom doesn't. Yes, that is a good feeling.

What a captivating start!! I passed over this fic God knows how many times before, the summary not quite catching my attention (it's a bit  vague), but damn am I glad I decided to give it a try today! :-D As unseemly as a homeless, scruffy version of the dignified and proud Vulcan SF officer appeared to be at first, you managed to flesh it out sufficiently and build characterizations strong enough to make it believable. Better, your Spock somehow survived with his dignity intact despite his ordeal (although his pride suffered a bit) and his mind is as sharp as ever. I also love the new maturity in Jim, his compassion for an anonymous beggar that turned to genuine care and worry for his Vulcan frenemy, and the fact it obviously still "clikcs" between them :-D Great efficient writing too. You have me very intrigued to find out how Spock found himself in that dour situation and what Jim will do to correct to help him. Now I'm moving on to the rest, but I wanted to take a few minutes to give you my first impressions :).

aaaaugh.... can't... hold back... nitpicky... brain...

you know sugar? like in candy? and sugar? like in fruit? it's the same dope. it's the same. it's the same damn stuff. (despite years of fanon stating otherwise.) same stuff.

/fist of nitpick

Author's Response:

Depends on the fruit, really! The semi-canon origin of the trope (novelization of The Voyage Home) specifically blames sucrose, apparently. Which is the sugar in some fruits, but not others. Which is why I went with "processed" sugars - just saying sugar in general, or even sucrose, is exceedingly problematic.  I mean, sucrose means Spock would get high off pineapples. So don't worry, I'm as nitpicky as you. ;)

No, not nothing in particular - he was looking at the darkening sky. It only made it more disturbing to Jim when he finally answered, in a barely audible murmur. "...I want to go home."

Oh my god. ::THUD::

(You do this moments well.)

I can really feel what Kirk's feeling (I couldn't fathom what Spock's feeling... plus, he's drunk.) right now. How devastating.

This is one of those stories that does, for me, what fiction should do.  It takes me away.  I often forget that I'm reading a story, and I'm so involved in it, so THERE, that when I reach the bottom and I run out of words, it's almost a shock to come back to reality!

REALLY enjoying this one!

Oh my God, drunk!Spock is ADORABLE!!!  I can haz a miniature to keep in my pocket at all times?

But I am worried that Spock will have a Vulcan freak-out when he wakes up in the morning.  I hope both he and Jim handle it fairly well...

So very very good!!!! I love your version of drunk!Spock, and the pacing, and McCoy being a good dad, and Kirk being such a gentleman even though it's driving me (and hopefully Spock) nuts! And for being such a diligent updater! I love waking up and finding a new chapter every day! You are a super hero!

A logical chapter. In my mind I was trying to get Spock a job at CERN. Of course, if he got a job there, he might never leave, and that would be a boo-boo.

Question: so Spock doesn't resent Spock Prime for putting him in a situation where he felt like he had to break up with Uhura, who clearly might take him back? Or was he ambivalent about the relationship to begin with? Clearly he's embarrassed to own up to Uhura about what a mistake he made, but assuming he is bisexual I'm surprised he doesn't ditch his buddies to be with this woman who clearly loves him. (Of course, she is leaving the planet, and he has no money, and Bones just got him a bunch of job leads, but I want to know if he's considering it.)

So I'm wondering if that situation on New Vulcan wasn't a little more complicated than I first assumed because it seemed like Spock had a pretty good life, with Uhura and Starfleet and everything, but then he tosses it away for something that doesn't work out, and now he won't go back because of something Spock Prime *said*? I mean, that's not exactly normal.

I'm really loving this conversations with Spock Prime. Love the reticence and the fact that Kirk responds in a realistic way.

What has little Jimmy gotten big Jimmy into? Love the bit about Spock trying to make a joke and failing.
