Wow, this is awsome storytelling, so different, so powerful!
Thanks so much for your comments, angelocustode. In the Beginning is one of my personal favorites of my K/S stories, but readers don't seem to see it the same way I do. Therefore, I really appreciate your response. Perhaps the death in the story is just too much for readers to take, but even though I was the one writing it -- a very emotional situation! -- I always saw the little girl as the Mother, all the way through, with the associated implied immortality, for believers, anyway. I've written one other story involving a non-human religion based on a Mother Goddess, so I obviously have some issues I was working out in that direction. Anyway, thanks so much for the kind words. I'm very glad you found something of value in this story.

A fabulous tale! There are many stories involving danger from a lonely, powerful alien or artificial intelligence, seeking love or meaning (among star trek stories I think of Metamorphosis, of Who Mourns For Adonais, and of V-ger in the first movie.) But I can't think of any that present this theme with as satisfying and imaginative resolution as this one. This is a surprising and wonderful story!

A tale from a gifted storyteller. I love the way this story unfolds. Kirk & Spock helping others while coming to terms with their own immortalty -together. Seeing them through the eye of an outsider givres a great perspective. The tenderness of the characters was heartfelt and realistic. Wonderful!
