I stayed up much too late last night reading this and thoroughly enjoyed it.  To me, it is a much more realistic presentation of the kind of relationship that two mature professional men would have than many portrayals I have seen.  Are there disagreements?  Yes, there are.  Are there hurt feelings?  Yes.  Do they act badly or spitefully or fail to do their duty because of their disagreements?  No.  I really hope you will continue to write and post your work because it is good.

Author's Response:

Thank you, Ms Bird!  Your review means so much to me!  This was my second venture into K/S story-telling.  My first one, Core of Desire, had been rejected for inclusion in a zine and I was feeling so blue and demoralized.  So I took a stab at trying something "different" and this story was accepted.  It is not my favorite of my very few works in K/S.  But the plot/storyline made a lot of sense to me when I first envisioned it.  I'm really glad you enjoyed it and could see where I was trying to head with it all.  I appreciate the comment, more than you know!  I might have at least a couple more K/S tales in me yet, begging to be told and posted someday.

Thank you so much for sharing your stories here! It's such a joy to find more Spirk fics that have withstood the test of time. This particular story gave yet again another nuanced take on an Established Relationship K/S, and I like that it's not overly angsty; these are just two lovers having a misunderstanding, nevermind that they're who they are. It's a semblance of normality they don't have, and that's what their relationship stands for for both of them. Love it!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for such an insightful and clear-headed comment and review!  I really appreciate the fact that you "get it".  I think this was the second K/S fic I ever attempted to write, specifically for submission to a zine.  It is not my favorite fic, believe it or not, I thought it rather slow and encumbered but once it was finished, I felt better about it.  I'm really glad you enjoyed it!  Love is tough sometimes and a good relationship takes a lot of work!  I always felt these two are more than up to it, that the bond between them is based on friendship and mutual admiration and somehow, some way they will overcome those pesky obstacles and keep it together, no matter what.

Sometimes fics are like that no matter how much it feels like there might be more the muse stops at a one time concept. Just rethinking reminded me of the number of canonical times  Spock wears his exasperated face in the context of JTK past history.  It's easy to like fairy tale K/S but the truth is that cannon is not like that so why should fanfic be.

The approach you have taken I enjoyed, especially Jim's kindness in the face of his old  friend's vulnerability. This story shows the emergence of the diplomatic thoughtful JTK from the brash younger man's past.  It's a shame Spock did not balance justifiable possessiveness and it's ugly twin jealousy, but unlike Jim he has not the history and practice of turning relationships to friendships.

Thanks for the hard work of getting this fic into electronic form. One advantage of the zine format is the high quality of writing that focused  editing enabled.

It seems that there is something missing what happened to Haddon did he die. You allude to Spock knowing that nothing happended but limit the explanation of his reaction. Almost as if somewhere there is a second chapter.

Author's Response:

Haddon Kamarovsky did not die.  There are no further chapters to this story, it's a "one shot".  I'm sorry if you had a problem understanding the story but I am very glad you've read and reviewed!  :-)
