Chapter 1: Complete Story
Wow, Killa, I owe you a gigantic apology for the stuff I said about this story back in the early 2000's. Now with 100% more Perspective™--everyone should try it!
Kirk is drowning in this story. Back then I thought it was because of his attraction to Spock. Reading the first few paragraphs, it's completely clear that it's because they've taken the Enterprise away from him, and he's reaching for Spock like for a life preserver, but it doesn't work (because: TMP). Total lack of reading comprehension. Somebody shoulda slapped me upside the head. Of course, nobody could tell me anything back then.
I was a complete ass and called everybody homophobic (among other things). Totally delusional. Have to laugh at myself now. I'm really sorry you had to be on the receiving end of my utter stupidity. You have my permission to tell everyone I'm a witless c*nty wanker. Or a wanky c*nt. If the shoe fits--!Author's Response:
Ha, *snrk.* I know I've been in fandom a long time because I don't even remember your negative comments. (Don't take that personally -- I don't remember much of anything that happened longer ago than last week!) I'm sure there's some justification for whatever you said, and any other criticisms people might have made. It's not like I knew what I was doing when I wrote this. But thanks for giving it another shot, anyway. As I've said many times, the one thing you have to say about this story and its sequel is that they were written from a very earnest and heartfelt place. For whatever that's worth!
There's something about context, I think, where if you come into a fandom and everybody's praising something they loved because they read it at just the right time and in just the right headspace, and you read it and are less than thrilled, you feel like, wtf? What are you people smoking? I don't think you're the first person who probably experienced some of that with this story. Definitely one of those, right time, right place things when it was originally posted. :)
