Discovered Star Trek through Vonda McIntyre's novel The Entropy Effect in 1981; became permanently hooked when I saw the Wrath of Khan in 1982. Started writing K/S when I encountered some Picard/Q on a Trek newsgroup in 1994, and wondered whether any old skool fans still existed. The answer turned out to be yes.

There's a lot to love about this story, but the two things that make so very memorable for me are the tour-de-force, unfaltering characterization of Kirk in crisis, and the beautiful structure of the narrative, with its carefully constructed flashbacks, pacing, and wonderfully simple, yet surprising, central metaphor. One of the best and most vivid illustrations of Kirk in love that I've ever read.

I'm more than slightly obsessed with this part of the canon timeline, and this is one of the most thoughtful and evocative stories I've read that addresses the question of, how do Kirk and Spock go on when so much has been lost, and everything's changed? The end of it always raises my spirits and fills me with love for these characters. I've read this a bunch of times, and I never get tired of it.

I so admire writers who can convincingly portray a Kirk and Spock who are not our Kirk and Spock, and stilll hold on to enough of the characters we know to make them feel authentic. Mirror Kirk is particularly difficult to convey. I can count on one hand the Mirror Universe stories that really capture my imagination, and make me care about these characters in their own right, and this is one of them. A satisfying read!

It's just the smallest of steps from canon to visualize Kirk as a male prostitute, isn't it? *g* Seriously, this story hits hard, and paints a picture of Kirk that is so far from idealized, you won't soon forget it. Sharp writing and powerful imagery won it a fistful of Golden O awards in 1998, including Best TOS Challenge Story and a tie for Best TOS Story.

This is an absolutely fascinating story, unlike anything I've ever read in K/S. I had to read it twice to understand what had happened, and then it left me sitting back from my computer in delighted understanding. It's a tough story, a bitter one, but I love it for its elegance, for the sharp and unforgiving characterization, for the ugliness and the sweetness that lie side by side. Also, for Spock's strength and acceptance, which is surprising and rings true. It's so rare that anyone who loves these characters writes them with such sharp edges without losing their vulnerability and connectedness. Very well done indeed, and I'll be going to read it again now. :-)

I really loved this, and hadn't realized I was hungry for just such a story, myself. This is my favorite spot in the ST timeline for K/S, and this story hit just the right notes of maturity, regret, and eroticism. But my favorite part is Spock's thoughts about Kirk, about his nature, because, yes. Absolutely.

Oh, how cool that you posted this! T'hy'la 3 was one of the first two zines I read, and I remember this so well. I must have read it a dozen times. I remember how excited I was by the concept -- I didn't realize people did things like this with fanfiction, and the idea of connecting Star Trek and Arthurian legend fascinated me. Lovely to see it here on the archive!

I've always found this to be the most satisfying of all your short stories. The original character is one I would love to read and know more about -- one of the strongest and most memorable OCs in Star Trek fanfic, for me. I also revel in the imagery of this piece. It starts out so bleak and ends so joyously, and with such hope and redemption for all of them. The language is also breathtaking, and flawless.
