There is a strain of just this sort of stubborn self-sufficiency in my mother's family. It is both heartbreaking and exhasperating... Like they must prove themselves to the universe. Amanda needs Vulcan-like self-control to prevent herself from smothering Spock with unwelcome human care, and limit herself to what he can accept (from her, or anybody).

Silver Lining is the first story I've written where I felt only half the story had been told, and that feeling was strong enough to motivate me to write a companion piece for it.
